introduction

Prekmurje (on the other side of the Mura river) is a bit of Slovenia like no other; because of that river (until 1924 you could only reach the other side by boat) the flat province of the country was very remote and for that reason people talk a dialect and you can still find a lot of traditional folklore, architecture and culture in this part of the country. Maybe Hungary fits this region better than Slovenia in this remarkable piece of land.

Storks are considered for good luck and a fairly large Roma population lives here. You see numerous large farms with thatched roofs who try to make a living growing crops like pumpkins, appels and peers. Prekmurje is also famous because of his floating mills and thermal baths.

highlights

Babic mill:

In the village Verzej you can still see a working floating mill. You can get there by walking a kilometer or two through the sleepy village from Terme Banovci and behind the football fields along the river Mura. The mill is from Roman times.

These mills were extremely useful for rivers that often swapped tide (or had to process a lot of rain). Until WWII there were dozens that still served in the river but nowadays there are only a few left of which Babic is one.

Even this is not a total floating mill since only the wheel is still in the water. The mill itself is on the river bank but is authentic - inside there are many ground bags and it smells like a distant past.

tips & advice (2013)

There is virtually no public transport in this region (bus and train). The best thing you can do is walk a kilometer to the nearby village of Cervey. At the next roundabout (for the supermarket Mercado) you have a good chance to be picked up both to Murska Sobota or to Ptuj (hitchhiking).

  • Name: Terme Banovci

This complex is very large and organized. In front is a large parking lot - then follows a large building with café and restaurant, terrace and the changing rooms. The price of the thermal baths are included in the price for an overnight stay. You will receive a pass to visit the baths.

There is an indoor pool and two outdoor pools next to the baths for showers and toilets. I was sorry that the receptionist spoke so minimal English. There is no supermarket in the village - a kilometer away is the village Verzey (where you can also admire the mill). I had no idea to put up my tent because the spots are not classified.
